Beginning in mid-October until shortly before Thanksgiving, the Merciful HELP Center collects Thanksgiving-type foods, staples, laundry detergent, and personal hygiene items to create food baskets for approximately 500 families from Hamilton County in Indiana.
Thanksgiving dinner items include all the 'fixings' necessary to bring a family together for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, right down to the stuffing! Frozen turkey, fresh potatoes, carrots, cheese, fruit, celery, milk, butter, eggs, fresh bread, and other produce are purchased, as well as any foods that are not donated. The box also includes pantry staples to make at least 4 other meals, like a meal of spaghetti, tuna and noodles, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and chicken and rice. We also include items that are not covered by food stamps, such as toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, dishwashing liquid, and more.
